A Brief History

Wealden Services was established in 1987 following The Great Storm of that year. Initially the company concentrated on clearing fallen trees but as this work declined over the next year or so we started to carry out remedial works to peoples gardens where the fallen trees had caused damage to the landscape.

One particular private client asked us if we would be prepared to cut her grass for her on a regular basis. Two lawn mowers were purchased and we attended every two weeks throughout the summer to cut the grass.

I realised that this regular work would be beneficial in as much that once the “contract” was agreed, we had regular work for that period of the fortnight for the rest of the cutting season. We then placed an advert in the local free paper advertising our grounds maintenance service. The business grew, and at this time our customers were mainly private residences. In 1989 London and Quadrant Housing Trust responded to our advert and asked us to submit a quotation to maintain the grounds on one of their housing estates in Crawley, West Sussex. We were successful with our quotation and as the years passed more schemes were awarded to us through the tendering process. A fair percentage of these were sheltered schemes where liaison with the resident manager was required at each visit.

Some of the contracts we tendered included internal cleaning duties, so another opportunity had presented itself and our first cleaning team came into being. 1993 and London and Quadrant gave permission for us to provide a building maintenance service to their housing stock. Reactive, voids and planned works were undertaken on the NHF schedule of rates.

An office, workshop and yard were leased in Lingfield, Surrey and were extended twice in subsequent years.

Grounds maintenance still provided the majority of our turnover and we started to travel further around the South East of England. Registered Social Landlords became our main source of turnover as we tailored our services to suit their needs. Private clients slowly reduced to a handful as we became totally focused on RSL’s.

To date and we now maintain the gardens and clean the internal areas of over one thousand housing schemes for landlords such as L&Q, Moat, Hyde, CCHA and Russet.

Our building work stream is now solely Disabled Adaptations which we carry out for Councils such as Brighton, Guildford and Ashford.
